On May 3, 1873 Van Alstyne was named in honor of Maria Van Alstyne, widow of railroad employee and stockholder, William A. Van Alstyne. Van Alstyne is said to be the only town in Grayson County that was named after a woman. Due to the railroad bypassing the old town of Mantua and purchasing property in what would later be called Van Alstyne, businesses began to move from Mantua to Van Alstyne. “Doc” Holiday was known to make the trip from Dallas to Denison many times bringing him through the area as well.
Now, at around 50 miles north of downtown Dallas, Van Alstyne is on verge of becoming a suburb of the big city, but just as the Pro Touring Classic Car maintains the character of the old classic, Van Alstyne has maintained it’s historical downtown character. Mainly built in the late 1800’s downtown Van Alstyne boasts many antique shops, diverse restaurants and a feel from the past. We are excited to become a part of this community and the many businesses that call it home.
While visiting The Lone Star Classic at the cities new downtown park, it’s easy to find your way all around the downtown area. Have fun and enjoy your visit.
